Getting to know the phonemes

In Sound Sets, each phoneme or sound of the selected language is identified by listing the IPA symbol. Next to each symbol are two examples with IPA transcription and English translation. You can choose to hear the examples demonstrated by a male or female speaker.

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a pronunciation system created by an international team of linguists, with the purpose of providing one set of symbols that can be used by everyone. This team has catalogued nearly every known spoken sound and given each one a specific symbol. Each language has a unique set of sounds.

Sound sets are available for American English, French and German on this site.
